Atwood Elementary
Atwood Elementary is a small country school with 133
students. The school is comprised of one section for each grade level,
beginning with kindergarten and continuing through grade 6. The school
was originally built in 1909 and included grades 1-12.
When the school needed a new gym in the mid 1940's,
members of the community traveled to Fort Wayne where they obtained
an army airplane hanger. The hanger was brought to Atwood piece by
piece and reassembled, with the gym built inside along with the parts
of the building currently used as the library, stage, art, and music
room. The newest addition which now compromises the majority of the
building was completed in 1956.
The last class to graduate from Atwood High School
celebrated the commencement exercises in May of 1962. Demolition of the old building
followed a short time later.
Today, Atwood Elementary School is an exciting mix
of old and new. Computers and technology highlight instruction in the classroom. The
smell of fresh hand-baked cookies and bread from the kitchen fill
the building. The community is largely rural with family oriented
patrons who are greatly supportive and loyal to the school.
This uniquely small environment supported by the vast
resources of the Warsaw Community School system offers students the
best of both big and small. Each student is known individually by
the entire staff and afforded the opportunity to participate in a
wide variety of both curriculum and extra-curricular programs and
activities.
